Sedia Systems JumpSeat® Collection Wins 2014 Good Design® Award

Chicago, IL / April 2015 Sedia Systems, leading global manufacturer of fixed seating solutions, is excited to announce that the JumpSeat Collection is the winner of a 2014 GOOD DESIGN Award.

Founded in Chicago in 1950, GOOD DESIGN is the world's oldest industrial design program, recently celebrating their 65th anniversary. The prestigious Awards are organized annually by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. Since 1950, entries for design and innovation, sustainability, creativity, branding, ecologically responsible design, human factors, materials, technology, graphic arts, packaging, and universal design are submitted annually by various industrial design and graphic design firms. In 2014, over 850 cutting-edge products and graphic designs from design firms from over 42 nations were selected and awarded. Sedia Systems is privileged to be recognized alongside some of the worlds' best designers and manufacturers of innovative products.

When industrial design firm Ziba Design needed an auditorium chair to fit the narrow risers of its new space, they set out to design their own solution. The immediate challenge was geometric: how to make a seat that could support an adult and nearly disappear when not in use. The answer was the revolutionary JumpSeat: a sleek and compact chair that closes to as little as 4 inches deep. Sedia Systems launched the JumpSeat globally in 2012 and the Collection now consists of the JumpSeat, JumpSeat 90 and JumpSeat Wall with new iterations continuing to evolve. Each version of the patent pending JumpSeat builds on the same baseline features. Its distinctive design combines the rigid compression elements of a cantilevered bridge with the more flexible tension components found in the human spine. The compressive and tensile strength of birch plywood and steel produce the chair's innovative folding mechanism.

The award-winning JumpSeat is available with a fixed or movable base and features 22" minimum center-to-center seat spacing that works especially well in lecture halls, auditoriums and reception areas. The JumpSeat 90 combines the innovative features of the JumpSeat with the space-saving benefit of the JumpSeat Wall. Sitting at 90 degrees, this chair is floor mounted and flush to the wall, ideal for additional seating in narrow corridors, boardrooms, small offices and library stacks. The award-winning JumpSeat Wall cantilevers off the wall, making it ideal for corridors, patient rooms, waiting rooms and other public areas where space is at a premium. The JumpSeat Collection's space-saving characteristics and versatile options allow healthcare, education and corporate facilities to fashion their own distinctive look and use the chairs in diverse spaces throughout their environments.

Approximately 40,000 GOOD DESIGN Awards have been given since the inception of the Award in 1950. These U.S. federally trademarked awards were founded in Chicago in 1950 by architects: Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. The black dot-shaped logo was designed the same year by the late Chicago graphic designer, Mort Goldsholl.
